Timber Frame Post Support

The pictures below are an example of what we mean by "solid blocking." This solid blocking is what is required underneath each post as stated on the plans. This blocking is used to transfer the load of the post all the way down to the footings. Many people opt for the 2x method of blocking because it can easily be cut to fit the spaces. Or as you can see in the first picture, it can easily be installed ahead of the floor system installation.

The last group of pictures shows the support being provided by timber. This takes a little bit more pre-planning but because it carries the timber frame look into the basement, it can look much more interesting than say... a sheetrock covered column.

The support for the posts can be built out of almost any material so long as it meets a few requirements...

  1. The support must be equal to or greater than the footprint of the post that it is supporting. In the case of a steel column, a plate of sufficient size makes up for the smaller diameter of the column.
  2. The material and method used must be capable of withstanding the load of the post it is supporting.
  3. The support must be continuous from the bottom side of the subfloor to the top of the footing. In most cases, a slab will cap the footing on the inside of the basement. The support can extend down to the top of the slab in that case and it will still be sufficient.
  4. The support must be in place BEFORE the timber frame is raised.

If the support is not provided, it is not a question of "if" but when the subfloor will begin to sag and fail under the force of the post.
