Walk-out Basement
Whether you are building on the stem wall of a view out basement or the slab that caps the stem wall of a walk-out basement, the framing is the same for the most part. We recommend that you build a 2x10 framed wall instead of a 2x4 framed wall. This is because we want to mimic a 10" concrete wall in both height and depth since the loads on the framed wall and the concrete wall are identical.
When framing this wall, it is best to set the outside edge of the framing back 7/16" or 1/2" from the outside edge of the foundation (see the walk-out wall section below). The reason for this is that when the sheathing is applied, there won't be a noticable seam where it transitions from SIPS to the framed wall in the basement.
After the 2x10 wall is framed, the handling of point loads from the posts is very similar to the full concrete wall. The difference is that the support must be at least the same size as the footprint of the post. In a concrete wall, you would only add a small amount of support against the wall because the concrete carries the rest of the point load. However the frame wall is not strong enough by itself to support the point load and therefore, you must put a post underneath the timber frame post above.
