The Good:
Flat, with room! Hooray...our favorite!! We love building on pasture and prairie. Typically these properties are large, relatively flat, with minimal obstructions like trees, giant rocks, or property lines. We can't say enough about the need for ample room. When we unload a semi-truck, we like to put all of the stacks of timber in 'single layer' stacks. This enables us to select one timber at a time for the building/raising process. You can imagine how much room is needed to put a whole semi-truck of timber in 'single layer' stacks, but, these properties typically afford us that luxury. It speeds up the raising process which translates to cost savings. Cranes can set up anywhere. Equipment has room to maneuver. Nobody's complaining about noise. It's construction paradise.
The Bad:
Proximity. Sometimes we really are in the middle of nowhere. Hotels, or AirBnB's, may be 15-20 miles away, as well as, gas, water, lunch, etc. We understand that the crane operator is making his hourly rate whether that boom is moving or not, so we like to keep the jobsite hopping to maximize his time. Therefore, we do not shut down for lunch and drive somewhere to eat. One of us will go find lunch and bring it back. Losing a man off the job can be manageable if he isn't gone too long. The prairie gives you room, but it doesn't give you those creature comfort conveniences.
The Ugly:
Hmm....really isn't an ugly. We've been doing this for 25+ years and pasture/prairie builds are where everything just... works. The weather can be intense: Kansas wind, summer heat that'll test anyone's resolve, and storms that roll in like freight trains. But those are manageable. The real "ugly" might be explaining to city folks why you chose to build "way out there." But when they visit and see that sunset over endless fields, with your timber frame glowing in the golden hour light... they get it.
What farmland building really involves.
Fastest, smoothest raising
possible
Room to stage, room to work, room to maneuver.
"Town" is relative
Hardware store? 30 minutes. Lunch? Pack it. Hotel for
crew? Better book the whole place - there's only one.
Why we love prairie
builds:
No distractions. There is nothing to worry about except the next piece of timber, and when everything just flows the way construction should, that's
prairie building. It's honest work in honest country.
Ready for prairie timber framing? We're right at home in the heartland, because this is home for us, too. Your wide-open spaces are our wide-open opportunity.
For us, a Kansas based timber frame company, this is the way timber framing is meant to be done. See that golden hour frame against the endless sky? That's what happens when you're not fighting terrain, permits, or property lines. These frames go up like clockwork. Every prairie project reminds us why we love this work. Room to stage materials properly, solid ground for equipment, and sunsets that turn fresh timber into gold. This is heartland timber framing, where the biggest challenges might be your own supply of daily energy.
In Summary...certainly our favorite is the 'Pastures & Prairies'. It seems like the majority of our clients that build on the flat heartlands of this country are 'salt of the earth' types who appreciate hard work and craftsmanship. This isn't to say that the other clients, in the mountains, lakes, or cities don't appreciate it. It just seems like these clients show up for 'raising day' with work clothes on, gloves, and that look in their eye that they are waiting on marching orders to help out. When everything has room to 'work right', it just 'works right'. Simple as that.
